A player can only place the Bust It bet only in case he is not involved in the main game. The bet will pay out in case a dealer first of all gets 3 cards exactly. And the dealer has to draw the 3rd card in order to settle the Bust It side bet, no matter if the player has a blackjack or bust. So the player may lose the main game and the Bust It bet will still win.
